Reexamining the context of União do Vegetal's 2006 legal victory
Here’s one from the archive. The story linked below was behind a paywall until now. I decided to remove the paywall on this particular piece and share it again. Since the recent escalation of the (decades-long) ongoing genocide of people in Palestine, there has been a small surge in discourse about Israel’s influence in the psychedelic sector and vice versa. Think of this as a footnote in that discussion.
While the excerpt below does not explicitly involve Israel, it does involve the Bronfmans, an incredibly wealthy and powerful family who themselves have numerous close links to Israel. (For example, the Bronfmans provided millions of dollars of seed money for Birthright Israel, which was itself established in partnership with the Israeli government.) The primary focus of the following piece is, instead, ayahuasca, and more specifically, how it became the center of a legal battle that made its way to the Supreme Court, establishing groundbreaking precedent for psychedelic law in the process.
